Deafness Issues

Samuel Johnson is hearing, but he taught mathematics at Gallaudet College for six years.  He did not grow up signing, but he now signs comfortably and fluently.

Deaf people have often suffered discrimination.   Their situation has improved as a result of the Deaf Pride movement, supported by such laws as the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act).  But deaf people may still have problems with the legal system and with courts.  If a deaf person can communicate directly with the lawyer and does not have to depend on an interpreter and does not have to always write notes, he or she will probably receive better and more satisfactory service.   It is also good to have a lawyer who is familiar with deafness and with the deaf community and with deaf people's problems.
